The Physical, Mental, and Spiritual Benefits of Wing Chun Kung Fu Training

Ask ten different people at the Wing Chun Kung Fu Academy why they train Wing Chun and you’ll get ten different answers. “Some people train here for self-defense, others for fitness, stress-relief, improved confidence, coordination, focus, discipline, to socialize, or just for fun,” explains the instructor Master Joe Sayah. People can walk into the studio stressed, angry, and frustrated and after the class walk out relaxed, calm, and positive.

"Most people think martial arts is just kicking and punching but there's a spiritual aspect to martial arts training," says Master Joe Sayah. "Through discipline you create good habits in your life and a humble spirit. The hard work of martial arts training generates self-discipline, character, fortitude, and strengthens the will to persist through difficulties and pursue perfection in oneself." The training to become a powerful martial arts fighter transcends the physical aspect carrying over to make one a powerful individual spiritually and mentally as well. The mind, body, and spirit are all connected and having a positive impact in one area affects all three. Practicing wing chun helps people empower themselves and attain greater wholeness.

We are looking forward to an awesome weekend of training and fun at the Phillip Island Adventure Resort Friday, November 5th to Sunday, November 7th, 2010. This is an  intensive weekend training camp including 6 hours of Wing Chun training in total. The Phillip Island Adventure Resort is a huge resort set on 30+ acres and has kayaking, archery, giant flying fox, a large swimming pool, tennis and basketball courts, table tennis, movie room, 5 minute drive to Smith's swim/surf beach, and is located just outside the heart of Cowes (main city in Phillip Island with shopping, pubs, restaurants, etc.). Last year Master Joe gave a magnificent seminar overwhelming his students with the variety of different types of techniques and QUANTITY including bil jee and phoenix pressure point strikes, locks, form applications, and chi sao! We were, myself included, completely mind-blown! Now Master Joe is set to do it again!

This year we are upgrading the lunch time catering to have a hot lunch instead of cold cut lunches, breakfast offers cereal, toast, and fruit.  We don't know what all the meals will be but last year Saturday night was a delicious roast dinner.  If you have any special dietary requirements (vegetarian, gluten-free, etc.) please email it to us asap so we can email in a special dietary form to the camp for them to accommodate your needs.

History of Wing Chun

Yip man and Bruce Lee - Chi Sao, Wing Chun

The origin of Wing Chun Kung Fu can be found in the turbulent, repressive Ching dynasty of over 250 years ago. It was a time when 90% of the Chinese race were known as the Hons and were ruled by the minority, who were the other 10% and were known as the Manchus. The Manchus placed a great amount of unjust law on the Hons. For instance, all the female Hon infants were made to bind their feet so that when they grew up they would be dependent upon their parents or husband. The work opportunity of the Hons was also very restricted. They were unable to hold office in Government higher than a certain level. Heavy tax burdens were placed on the country so that the Manchus could have economic control of the Hons. Kung Fu training was also banned for the Hons. Nevertheless, the Manchu Government eventually began adopting the Hon culture and they respected the Shil Lim Temple as a Buddhist sanctuary.
